super kayak-Riot Edge 14.5 Ultralight

15 December 2022
Upgraded from my Hurricane Santee Sports 116 which did good service for nearly 4 years, a great starter recreational kayak. The Riot Edge 14.5 Ultralight is a great package. It's light at 17.5kg, tracks well, has large storage hatches, plenty of bungee on deck, seat is good with the back adjustable. And after all these years I am convinced that a rudder, which it has, helps to keep it on track in windy conditions. Takes the wash and small waves easily. This yak is also quite fast for its size. Couldn't be happier with this purchase. Steve at Taren Point was extremely helpful and provided great advice. Great price point for an extremely capable all round kayak.

Riot Edge 14.5 U and Santee 126.

By: on 7 March 2022
I have purchased the Riot Edge 14.5 Ultralight after a couple of years with my Santee 126. The Santee 126 is a great recreational kayak, very stable, very comfortable seat and adjustable foot braces, very easy to enter and exit, light, good storage, nice paddle clip. It can handle a few accidental bumps and scrapes (better avoided). But in a cross wind, with no rudder, it was hard work to keep on track. And not as quick as some of my paddle buddies’ boats. The Riot Edge 14.5 Ultralight is definitely quicker, still reasonably stable (though my own stability may have improved), light. The seat comfort is okay, but not up to the Santee. The rudder makes direction management a lot easier but there is no fixed foot bracing to push off. I am still learning how to counter my stroke with movement of the rudder foot pedals. Care must be taken strapping to roof racks to avoid getting caught on any of the deck straps. The cockpit is cozy, not a lot of room for any extras, need to stow them in the hatch. The hatches have a stretchy fabric as the initial cover; this is very hard to put on so I have been experimenting with just leaving them hanging inside the hatch, under the plastic covers. I have had no water issues despite paddling some rough river water on occasions. There is no paddle clip. The retractable carry handles are okay, but the Santee’s fixed straps are excellent. Overall I have been happy with the Riot Edge 14.5 Ultralight. With current retail prices, if you have the money, I would recommend considering paying a little more for the Boreal Storm with its better seat. But research with C Kayak first!

Great

By: on 2 March 2022
I love this kayak. Have owned it for 10 years and converted it to fishing by putting rod holder fixtures into the roof of the main body. Works well. After many years I have finally worn out the bottom on oysters and rocks etc but the rest of the body has plenty of life in it, (if it weren't for me being so rough with it). It is light. I am only 5ft 7 so it works well for small/light persons. I have taken it offshore many km with no hassles. I pop a sail up in high winds for a bit of a laugh. It is stable enough. Goes through waves well though like all kayaks coming into shore on a wave can be tricky. They have limited keels. Highly recommended. Will probably buy another one exactly the same. If you are new to kayaking I recommend you visit a store to get an expert to size you for the right kayak. I did.

Exactly what was needed

By: on 24 August 2021
The Riot edge kayak was exactly what I needed. Light, easy to paddle, fast, stable and robust. The weight was really important so i could get in on and off the car myself, but also not too expensive aswell as being robust enough for knocks. It is a dream to paddle in the water aswell. The whole process of picking this kayak was also easy by the patient explanations of Craig from CKayaks. He listened to what was needed, identified the best options and talked through them all and then took the time to then make sure it fitted and worked afterwards
